Let’s talk about how to fix it with a simple, game-changing habit that I call “The 10-Gulp Rule.”

Why You’re More Dehydrated Than You Realize (Especially in Summer)

Summer’s no joke, right? Between sweating it out at the gym, chasing kids at the park, and surviving the heat, your body’s losing water faster than you can say “sunscreen.” 

Add in that morning coffee, a travel day, or a killer HIIT (high‑intensity interval training) session, and your hydration tank is on empty before lunch.

A common sign of your body crying for water is the “Thirst signal”. But the wild part here is that it shows up late, and by the time you’re aware of it, your body is already running low on water. 

Research informs us that even a small drop (as little as 1-2% water loss) can disrupt cognitive function, mood, and physical performance.

Worse? Dehydration can trick your brain into thinking you’re hungry. 

What’s even crazier is that your brain often confuses thirst for hunger.

Let’s ditch counting ounces and instead try the 10-Gulp Rule: your no-brainer way to stay hydrated without overthinking it. Here’s how it works:

👉🏻Every time you pick up your water bottle, take 10 big gulps.

That’s it! Whether it’s a fancy smart bottle, your trusty shaker, or a mason jar you love, make 10 gulps per round your new baseline.

Why it works:

  • Habit Stacking: You’re pairing hydration to an action (bottle to lips = 10 gulps).
  • Behavioral Anchoring: It locks into your routine like muscle memory. This way, you don’t need to remember anything.
  • Fast & Effective: You’re getting a solid hydration hit in seconds, instead of sipping all day and forgetting by dinner.

Hit this routine 4 to 6 times daily, and you’re likely hitting 60 to 90 ounces, right where most active adults need to be. 

PS: A good rule of thumb is to drink ½ your bodyweight daily (in ounces) to be moderately hydrated!
