Helping a Family Member Who Needs to Lose Weight
It is difficult to watch a loved one struggle with their obesity or health challenges. We can want a person to change, but its only when that person internally makes that personal choice to change that they can progress.
One way to test their conviction to change is to issue a small challenge to them. This is how each and every transformation begins, and is truly one of the most difficult steps. This is the process Chris uses with everyone, and is vitally important to anyone’s success.
The first step in the journey is a commitment; a promise made to themselves. Whether they want to lose 2 pounds or 200 pounds, ask them to select ONE small change that they can make in their current lifestyle that will improve it for the better. It can be anything from removing soda from their diet, to walking continuously for 10 minutes daily, to drinking two extra glasses of water every day, to eating breakfast every day. No matter their fitness level, have them pick one small thing to change in their life for the better, and commit to fulfilling that promise daily.
NOTE: Do not underestimate this commitment. They need to take it seriously. This is a true test of whether or not they are ready to commit to this journey. Their ability to fulfill a commitment to themselves is directly linked to their ability to complete this journey. This is the test run.
In addition, do not try to overachieve with their commitment. Whatever the commitment is, make sure that it is realistic and do-able every day…because it is VERY important that they fulfill this promise to themselves. Their internal integrity is on the line.
We are so excited you have chosen to help your loved one embark upon this journey; Chris sends his heartfelt welcome to you. Along the way you and they will be challenged mentally, physically and emotionally. It isn’t always easy, but in the end they will have the skills, the knowledge, and most importantly the integrity and dignity to accomplish anything.
